Graham Davies to be Guest Speaker

At our upcoming July club meeting (Sunday July 7th at 7pm) we are fortunate to have Graham Davies as our guest speaker to provide us with an overview of his photo artistry.  Graham operates the The Bald Photographer Studio & Gallery in Cherry Valley - www.baldphotographer.com, specializing in black and white images using real film (that's right! - non-digital) and developed in his extensive gallery darkroom.  Graham has a deep grounding in photography, from his roots as a photojournalist for UK newspapers to his artistic portraiture and fine art hangings.  He is very well known in the artistic circles of the County and its surrounds and recently published a book chronicling the final operating days of the Royal Hotel in Picton including its last residents.  This year, Graham is also one of the judges for the Clic Photo Show which commences later this month.

This is really a must see for anyone interested in artistic photography and I do encourage you all to be in attendance.

Another good turnout of twenty-five people showed up for our June 2nd meeting which included several educational presentations including a "Raw vs JPG" image format discussion and our first hands-on workshop by Bert Jenkins demonstrating some basic techniques that he uses to edit images in Photoshop Elements.  A Bird Festival slideshow of a collaboration of member's images was presented along with a wonderful collection or highly creative and entertaining images submitted to our May monthly challenge - "Reflections".  We reached a new high in terms of both member participation and also in the number of images submitted to our theme challenge.

 

We did have a few technical glitches, trying to get the computers and the projector working in sync and I have been working hard to resolve these difficulties for future meetings.

Several decisions were taken at the meeting.  The first was the acceptance by the membership of a club logo.  It has a fresh design, is immediately recognizable as relating to photography, has an attachment to the County and is inclusive of all members.  I'd especially like to thank Tina Konecny for her work on this project. Our new logo looks as follows:

On a separate front, given the cost of printing up the Wellington 150th anniversary booklet, coupled with the uncertainty of being able to sell enough to breakeven, it was decided not to proceed further on the booklet concept.  We have, however, uploaded the Wellington images to our Facebook page and have shared the link with the Wellington Business Development Association, so that the general public has access to those images.  They can be seen by using the following url link:

In addition, both the "Bird Festival" and the "Reflections" images have been posted to our facebook page, so get on over to it and have a look - especially those of you who were unable to make it to the meeting.  Our facebook page is located at www.facebook.com/countyfotoclub.  You don't need a facebook account to view the images.

The June monthly challenge/assignment was handed out with the theme - "Up Close & Personal".  So get your macro gear out of storage and let's see what you can do.  Be colourful, be creative, but most of all, just be you!  Normal requirement - five images, sized 1024x768px (approx), watermarked and file names to include your name and something descriptive about the image.  Images due by Wednesday, July 3rd.

We are also going to try another club outing on Sunday June 23rd (1pm) at Lavender Fields which is located at 732 Closson Road.  More on this closer to the date but please earmark it into your calendars.  I'm planning to show a lot of purple images at our next club meeting on Sunday July 7th.

"Birding Festival" and "Reflections Slideshows

I am now putting together the bird festival/bird-banding slideshow for our June 2nd club meeting. I would appreciate receiving any images you have that would be appropriate for such a display of our local and migrating avians. They can be shots taken at this year's festival or from previous year's outings. I will include pictures taken from our “bird-banding outing” of May 12^th as well as those from others of you that were able to get to experience the 10 day festival here in the County.

I would appreciate you sending images sized to approx. 1024x768 px with your name watermarked in a corner. It would be nice to have the birding pictures in to me by end of day Monday May 27^th.

In addition, the monthly club challenge images - “Reflections” - are due in by Thursday May 30^th. Please be as creative and adventuresome as you like with these club theme assignments.

Our next meeting is on Sunday June 2^nd at 7:00 pm at the Wellington Public Library.  I do hope you all will participate in these club activities so as to make our meetings more enjoyable and inclusive for all of us.

May Meeting ReCap

We had another informative and entertaining session at our May monthly meeting.  Our guest speaker, Jess Mulholland, discussed her progression as a photographer from photojournalism to her current specializations of portraiture and weddings.  She discussed her techniques to get subjects relaxed and natural for the image capture session.  Her work can be viewed in more detail at http://jcmulhollandphotography.ca.

Eric Pierce Took us on a historical voyage of the changes and the current status of digital photography and touched upon many helpful tips and routines for viewing, editing, organizing and archiving our images.  Karen Smith displayed a series of images that demonstrated the true beauty of the natural environment and discussed the various pressures encroaching upon that wonderful ecosystem.  Over 90 images were submitted and viewed for our last month's challenge - "Shoot a Fowl Foto".  These images have been posted to our facebook page located at facebook.com/CountyFotoClub
Caspar Radden entertained us with a DVD presentation entitled "Raptors" which included still images, sound, and video pictures. A slideshow featuring collages of images from the club's Wellington photoshoot of Apr 21st was reviewed along with a discussion of how we might put this into a small saleable booklet for Wellington's 150th anniversary celebrations on the July 1st weekend.  The meeting ended with the new May monthly challenge of "Reflections".  Also the assembled group was reminded of the Bird Banding photoshoot planned for Sunday May 12th, 9:30am at the Port Traverse bird banding station.  Thanks for all who attended.

May 5th Meeting Reminder

The May meeting of the Prince Edward County Photography Club will feature Jess of JC Mulholland Photography discussing her start as a photojournalist and her on-going journey which has resulted in her unique style and techniques for capturing images of people. Eric Pierce will present a digital primer workshop for photographers.  In addition, we will view many wonderful images taken by club members including submissions to this month's club challenge - “Shoot a Fowl Foto”- and a review of our efforts to document the historic nature and character of the Town of Wellington during this its 150th year anniversary.

"Shoot a Fowl Foto"

The deadline for submitting your "fowl" images has been extended to end of day Wednesday May 1st.  Please submit jpg files that have been taken in the past month or so, sized to approx 1024x768 pixels with your name clearly watermarked on the front (corner) of the image to countyfotoclub@gmail.com.  These will be assembled into a slideshow for our May 5th meeting and will also be posted to our facebook page www.facebook.com/CountyFotoClub.  We look forward to viewing some wonderful pictures of our tiny winged comrades.

Wellington Photo Shoot - Historical Rendition

Our first club photo shoot is planned for Sunday April 21st.   We will meet at 1:00 pm in front of the Wellington Town Hall (located at 246 Main St.) and then spread out in smaller groups to capture the historical buildings and homes of Wellington.  Our goal is to demonstrate both the timelessness of many of the original structures as well as document the changes that have taken place to the Town since its indenture some 150 years ago.  If you have old photos of the town from years gone by, that would be very helpful for deciding how and where to shoot individual locations.  We hope to put together a club presentation and possibly a small booklet as a souvenir of the town's anniversary. 

Bring your cameras (maybe even tripods) and your creative eyes. If you have any old pictures of Wellington, bring them along so we can take the same picture from the same spot.

I do hope we get a good turnout.  At the present time. they are forecasting sunny weather for Sunday.  Take this opportunity to possibly "kill two birds with one stone".  I know that is a terrible analogy to use but our April monthly club challenge is to "Shoot a Fowl Foto" and many fowl await us in the Wellington harbour area!
